TOYS FOR TOTS

Our company was a co-sponsor for this charity and it fell on me to produce a spot that could run all over the Gulf Coast region, not just in my Birmingham market. The idea was given to me to have the girl walking alone until she bumps into some Marines who giver her a gift. I took that and broke it down into storyboards for approval from the sergeant in charge of the local Marines. It was an interesting experience directing about 20 Marines. I’ll say this: they sure do follow direction well.
I tried to give the video a slightly different look that normal in this spot. To accomplish that, I boosted the saturation in every shot so that the colors would be especially vibrant. I also slowed every shot down to about 90%. This made it really tough to keep the spot at 30 seconds (and I still think it would flow better as a :60), but it did add to the drama a little. Overall, I was very pleased with the end result.
I also happened to win Second Place for Best :30 Spot with this spot at the 2004 Charter Media Gulf Coast Regional Awards.
