America's Thrift Store

...and then there are spots like this one destined to keep me humble forever.  This spot was so ridiculous I just had to include it here.  We just put this dude in a suit and had him act insane.  The funniest thing about this shoot was the reaction we got from the customers in the store that day, which is to say they didn't react at all.  Usually, the camera crew attracts attention on its own.  Add in a clown in an Uncle Sam costume and you'd think we might elicit a stare or a chuckle.  But no, these Thrift Store shoppers took it all in stride like jaded New Yorkers.  Nothing was going to get between them and their next bargin.

The part that goes to a full screen graphic with alternating expressions on Uncle Sam was something I had to throw together in post to cover the fact that we didn't shoot enough footage.  I purposely made it look just as cheesy and ridiculous as the rest of the spot.  It was a guilty pleasure cutting lose with the sound effects library.  The shots of Uncle Sam riding in the shopping cart were done backwards and I then reversed the speed in post production.

This one will never win a CAB award, but we all got a laugh out of it.
