SAVAGE TAN
Since 1999, I have produced the television spots for Savage Tan and its sister company, Santa Fe Day Spa & Salon, both located in Birmingham. People don't believe me when I tell them that working with these models is just another shoot for me, but it's true. In fact, the pressure is on, because I have to make sure these ladies look their best and if they don't, it's probably my fault.
This particular spot was shot over a couple of days in late February of 2002. The two models pictured above were shot on location at Birmingham's Botanical Gardens. You will see a third model in the spot, I shot her at Oak Mountain State Park in nearby Pelham, AL. She did not enjoy standing in the water in February, but we can't wait until the spring to shoot because by that time the swimsuit-buying rush is over.
I'm particularly pleased with the way I shot the models. By placing their backs to the sun, not only did we get that nice edge of hard light on their shoulders to help separate them from the background, but we were able to open the iris further since their faces were shaded. By opening the iris, we were really able to take full advantage of the beautiful setting around us. We simply used a reflector to bounce sunlight back onto their faces to provide a nice soft look.
